The El Macero Fashion Show was SOOOO much fun! Our amazing models Brenna, Gabriela, Julie, Gaelyn and Nika showcased the designs to perfection, and the audience was so receptive and enthusiastic. The boutique was well received too- and I met so many cool people! I was pretty intimidated to showcase along with 3 project runway star designers, but they were so cool and Courtney Dempsey, anchor with CBS Good Day Sacramento was incredible with how she gave a thoughtful, animated commentary of the entire runway and then had the designers come up for questions and answers with the audience. It really bonded everyone and made it very meaningful. It was a very special opportunity and I think people were really able to understand what Kombucha Couture is about, and what we are trying to achieve long term- to create a sustainable new vegan leather with far reaching applications across many industries and aspects of life and culture. Live culture! Sweet day! See pics below, and feedback from the El Macero Fashion Show Committee…word on the street was that this was the best show in the 50+ years of this beloved annual event. Wooohoooo! Continue reading

Friday November 20, 2015 celebrated one year since Didi and I met as designers for the Annual CBS Good Day Sacramento Designer Challenge. I entered it with my amazing friends Bindi and Samantha as assisant and model, and Didi was assistant to another designer. Her team won, but I feel like I won the jackpot, meeting Didi that day. I could never have created the Paris collection without her talent, flair and dedication. And now this year, full circle, I was her assistant with Jayden Aveena as model. Same rules as always, each team received a bag containing 3 fabrics (we all received identical) and an awkward item. We had 5 minutes to shop for extras and 1.5 hours to create a design. Thanks to beautiful and mischievous Good Day anchor Courtney Dempsey, we were given lime green taffeta, burgundy taffeta and gold lace. And a garland of plastic gold bells as our awkward item. Eeek! Earrings, for sure….!
Didi didn’t have any plan until she saw the fabrics. She immediately sketched a form fitting dress with a v in front, zipper in back and a multi layered fish tail. We shopped like crazy people for threads, cords, black lace and zipper. Then the action was on! Seeing Didi work her magic is amazing. She put me to work on the layered flounce and she started draping, pinning, snipping and sewing. And voilà! We won! We didn’t see the hour and a half go by, it was super fast paced but never stressful with Didi around. And SO much fun! Jayden looked amazing! Didi sewed cord loops into the front and back v lines and then laced them with the same cord- so clever, it gave texture and statement. Sexy elegant goth, as she does so well. Didi will have her Sugaretii line of clothing showcased live on Good Day Sacramento next month. GO Didi!!! So proud of her!
Finally we have found a way to bring you updates and recent photos and news and have it linked to our beautiful very coded website that can’t be modified very easily right now….just tune into this blog and hopefully it will stay almost as current as our other social media playgrounds! For now, here is a bit of a biography by way of introduction and a big kombucha hug!
Sacha, Didi & Team Kombucha Couture!
Kombucha Couture is a live culture vegan leather design company based in Davis, California. Sacha Laurin, owner and founder is combining her passion for and knowledge of fermentation and dairy science, and her love and vision for slow and organic fashion. She grows sheets of cellulose-based kombucha textile from tubs of fermented green tea, the bacterial and yeast SCOBYs spinning cellulose around themselves as silkworms spin silk. The kombucha cellulose is then dried into vegan leather that still contains the probiotic, detoxifying organisms, and can imitate canvas, leather or silk, depending on the process used. Laurin combines kombucha textiles with repurposed metals and materials and other environmentally friendly textiles such as bamboo fiber. The result is a new, sustainable resource of huge potential and application. Kombucha Couture is creating biodegradable vegetal non-violent leather and probiotic textile that is unique, cutting edge and good for you from the inside out. Kombucha Couture recently showcased a 22 piece collection “Game of Kombucha” as finale designer at the acclaimed venue Espace Pierre Cardin during Paris Fashion Week on September 30, 2015.
